Anyway, that got me thinking about college. During my stint at Miami, I spent a number of nights playing music in coffee shops. Nothing too elaborate, just me, my guitar and a microphone. Sharing songs I’d written about stuff that was going on in my life.
Sox players are also participants in Mullet Night even if it’s not exactly voluntary. During the actual game, mullets are superimposed on each player’s line-up picture largely displayed on the park’s jumbo electronic scoreboard.

Matt Jernigan: The bass player, drummer and I were out in L.A. in 1994 working with a management company trying to get a deal. At the time, the labels were not interested in our kind of music (heavy blues-based rock), so someone from the agency asked us if we might want to try and do a tribute to Led Zeppelin. We had a good guitarist, but he was not into doing it, so we recruited John McDaniel (Thank God!).
Unlike Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival in the fall, and Epcot’s International Flower & Garden Festival in the spring, the summer concerts feature 1980’s wedding band. Though they aren’t the original artists, many fans return year after year to see the tributes. Concert aficionados report that they enjoy these concerts just as much, and though the acts are not as famous, some of these tribute artists are just as talented as many well-known musicians.
From the bass playing perspective what is required as a player? A good all round player who is ready for the gig, a good knowledge of the bass guitar and its role. Practice and learn new ideas and techniques, be ready for new songs and material. Play what is required for the song, you may be asked when recording what to play; if you are doing session work you get paid to play what is asked! If you’re doing live work playing covers play what is required for the songs you play! If you get a gig writing, that’s great and you can be creative with your bass playing!
Essential to check before hiring a live band is, whether the venue of your choice is licensed to stage such a show. If you don’t make this check before you start your hiring process, all your planning may turn out to be one huge waste.
